The back foot

Your back foot MUST be over the fins
I always say " your back foot MUST be over the fins when you are turning ." That is true because your surfboard pivots off the fin(s) and hard edge of the rails at the back of board.

It is easy to see when the surfboard has a traction pad. Notice this surfer's foot is all the way to end of the pad called the tail block.

She is trying to turn from the center of the board. She is Leaning the board with her heels but not Turning. She needs to put her back foot where the red arrow is pointing ( plus not look down )

But once you get good, you can start breaking away from the basics. Like this tennis player hitting the ball back under his legs. They do not teach you this at tennis school

Remember the rule " your back foot must be over the fins " ? Well, his back foot is in front. See his leash cuff ? He is doing a drop-cross or reverse-drop knee bottom turn. In Waikiki , we called this a Rick Walker take-off

When you get good at any sport , you can start having MORE fun. Once I teach the basics, then you can experiment with different turning and noseriding techniques

Here I am doing a drop-cross cutback. My eyes are looking away from the turn. My shoulders are squared with the deck. My back hand is open not closed. And my back foot is ............. uhhhh......... in front of my front foot.

Next week, we'll talk about proper foot placement

until then check out http://starb.on.coocan.jp/ Keep a eye out for wear the leash cord is .
